History & Development

The push for a casino in Bristol began in 2018 when coal barons Jim McGlothlin and Clyde Stacy outlined plans to convert the shuttered Bristol Mall into a resort casino. In November 2020, Bristol voters approved a casino referendum by a 71% margin. Hard Rock International partnered with the local ownership group in November 2019. A temporary casino called “Bristol Casino – Future Home of Hard Rock” opened on July 8, 2022, inside the former mall, offering 30,000 square feet of gaming space with approximately 900 slots, 20 table games, and a sportsbook. Construction of the permanent resort culminated in a grand opening on November 14, 2024, attended by Seminole Tribe of Florida Chairman Marcellus W. Osceola Jr., Hard Rock International Chairman Jim Allen, and other officials. During the ceremony, a $100,000 donation was made to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Helene relief.

Facilities & Gaming

The permanent resort spans 620,000 square feet. The casino floor houses nearly 1,500 slot machines (including popular titles like Wheel of Fortune and Cleopatra) and more than 50 table games (blackjack, roulette, craps, poker variants). A Hard Rock Bet retail sportsbook allows patrons to wager on professional and college sports. The hotel offers over 300 rooms and suites, including Deluxe Queen (375 sq ft), Deluxe King (375 sq ft), and Silver Suites (707‑720 sq ft). Amenities include a pool deck, Body Rock fitness center, Rock Spa, in-room dining, the Marketplace, and Constant Grind coffee bar. Hard Rock Live provides a 2,000‑seat venue for concerts and events; the opening show featured Blake Shelton.

Dining & Entertainment

Dining options include a full-service Hard Rock Cafe, Council Oaks Steaks & Seafood (a fine-dining steakhouse), and other casual outlets. The resort also features Rock Shop retail selling Hard Rock merchandise. The property is part of the Unity by Hard Rock global loyalty program, enabling members to earn and redeem rewards across participating Hard Rock hotels, casinos, cafes, and shops.

Economic & Community Impact

The project created thousands of construction and permanent jobs. Tax revenues from Hard Rock Bristol are distributed by the Southwest Virginia Regional Improvement Commission to 12 counties and two cities, with funds earmarked for education, transportation, and public safety. In fiscal year 2025, the casino generated $38.7 million in gaming tax revenue, of which $12.9 million was allocated to the RIC. The city of Bristol also benefits from increased meals and lodging taxes.

Regulatory & Licensing

Hard Rock Bristol holds a facility operator’s license from the Virginia Lottery Board, originally issued in April 2022. The property operates under the oversight of the Virginia Lottery and complies with state gaming regulations, including a 21+ age requirement for gambling.

Digital & Online Presence

Hard Rock International launched a joint venture, Hard Rock Digital, in 2020, offering an online sportsbook, retail sportsbook, and internet gaming platform. While the Bristol property itself is a land‑based casino, patrons can access the Hard Rock Bet app and website for mobile wagering in Virginia. Future Outlook

Hard Rock Bristol continues to expand its entertainment lineup and community engagement. A PBS Appalachia Virginia studio (4,000 sq ft) opened in March 2025 within the resort. The property remains a focal point for regional tourism and is expected to drive further economic development in Southwest Virginia.
