Malagò Puts Brakes on Pirlo’s Italy Coaching Appointment Over Fonbet Ambassador Role

Andrea Pirlo’s path to becoming head coach of Italy’s national football team has hit a significant hurdle, with FIGC President Giovanni Malagò reportedly freezing the appointment process over the former midfielder’s commercial ties to Russian sportsbook operator Fonbet. The delay was first reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport and later detailed by Corriere della Sera, which said Malagò sought legal clarification on Pirlo’s ambassadorial contract with the operator before moving forward.

Pirlo, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, has served as a global ambassador for Fonbet since October 2025. The relationship reportedly stems from his connection with billionaire Sergey Lomakin, a major Fonbet shareholder and investor in Dubai United FC, the club Pirlo has managed since July 2025. According to Corriere della Sera, Pirlo informed the FIGC that the Fonbet deal is a personal commercial partnership separate from his coaching role at the Dubai club. The federal prosecutor reviewed the contract over the weekend and concluded that it was distinct from his employment, yet Malagò is said to have cancelled a scheduled meeting that was expected to finalise Pirlo’s hire.

Political and Commercial Sensitivities

The controversy arrives at a delicate political moment for the FIGC. Malagò, who became president in June, has championed a 1% betting rights levy on football wagering to fund stadium redevelopment, grassroots investment, and modernisation of the sport. That proposal is central to negotiations ahead of Italy’s September budget, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government finalising its fiscal agenda before the 2027 general election. Against this backdrop, any issue that could strain football’s relationship with the gambling sector or provoke political backlash is likely to be treated with extreme caution.

Italy’s ongoing support for international sanctions against Russia—including Meloni’s recent pledge of an additional €4bn in defence spending for Ukraine—makes Pirlo’s Fonbet link particularly sensitive. Although Italian reports have not alleged a direct connection between Fonbet and the Kremlin, the operator is one of Russia’s oldest sportsbooks, licensed by Roskomnadzor since 2016 and running over 1,000 retail outlets. Pirlo’s association with the company has been known in Italian football circles since 2022, when he attended a Moscow event hosted by Lomakin.

Internal FIGC Tensions

The appointment had been pushed by FIGC Technical Director Paolo Maldini and former sporting director Leonardo, after Pep Guardiola swiftly distanced himself from speculation linking him with the Italy job. According to Corriere della Sera, both Maldini and Leonardo threatened to resign if Pirlo’s appointment was blocked, viewing the move as an infringement on their sporting autonomy. The same report suggests that details of Pirlo’s Fonbet relationship may have been strategically leaked due to broader concerns within Italian football about his limited managerial experience.

Pirlo’s coaching record remains mixed: brief, single-season stints at Juventus and Sampdoria did not produce sustained success. If the appointment collapses, Malagò will be forced to restart the search for a coach capable of restoring the Azzurri’s standing while also rebuilding confidence in the FIGC’s leadership and reform agenda.
