Cardinals Scouting Chief Denies Leaking Draft Intel, Vows to Fight NFL Suspension

Arizona Cardinals director of college scouting Ryan Gold has formally contested his indefinite suspension by the NFL, asserting through counsel that he did not provide third parties with non-public draft information for betting purposes. Gold was penalized last Friday for violating the league’s gambling policy, marking the NFL’s first sports-betting ban in roughly three years.

Attorney Mike Caspino blasted the allegations as “blatantly false” and confirmed that an appeal has been filed. “We have demanded an appeal, and we look forward to clearing his good name,” Caspino told ESPN. The league’s investigation concluded that Gold leaked material non-public data regarding the Cardinals’ 2026 NFL Draft selections, though the recipient of that information has not been publicly identified, and it remains unclear whether any wagers were placed as a result.

Gold Fights Allegations

According to Caspino, Gold had no advance knowledge of which players the Cardinals would select; only owner Michael Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort were privy to the picks before draft night. The attorney further claimed that Gold’s wife had placed a series of $10 weekly parlays with a high school friend group but stressed that his client did not participate in any betting activity. Gold himself has not commented on the case.

The Cardinals used their 2026 draft capital to retool the offense after releasing veteran quarterback Kyler Murray, selecting Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love third overall, adding quarterback Carson Beck, and later picking offensive lineman Chase Bisontis and wide receiver Reggie Virgil. Two days before the draft, Love carried +225 odds at BetMGM to be the third pick, with only Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey having shorter odds.

League Landscape and Precedents

The NFL stated that while it found “no reason to believe the integrity of any NFL game was affected,” the league “takes any violation of the Gambling Policy with the utmost seriousness.” The suspension coincides with broader integrity discussions: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently said he would consider forming a coalition among professional leagues to establish best practices for sports integrity, though the NFL has yet to address such a proposal.

The league handed down 10 gambling-related suspensions in 2023, including a one-year ban on then-Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who admitted placing multiple bets from his locker, including a four-figure wager on a teammate’s “over” for rushing yards. Rodgers was reinstated after a year and now plays for the Minnesota Vikings. Players from the Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos, and Washington Commanders were also suspended.

Gold, entering his 13th season with the Cardinals and elevated to head of college scouting in 2025, is expected to report for training camp this Wednesday as his appeal process unfolds.
