History and Foundation

The university was established on 12 March 1365 under the charter of Duke Rudolph IV of Austria, modelled after the University of Paris. Although initially founded, papal ratification for the theological faculty was delayed until 1384 due to pressure from Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who sought to protect the Charles University in Prague. The first university building opened in 1385, and by the mid-15th century, the university had grown to over 6,000 students, becoming the largest university in the Holy Roman Empire. During the Renaissance, humanist scholars such as Johannes Regiomontanus taught there. The university underwent significant reforms in the 19th century under Empress Maria Theresa and later under the Habsburg monarchy, evolving into a modern research institution.

Academic Structure and Organisation

The university is organised into 15 faculties and 5 centres, covering disciplines from Catholic theology and law to computer science, life sciences, and translation studies. It offers Bachelor's, Master's, teacher education, doctoral, and continuing education programmes. The academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters, with instruction primarily in German, though many Master's programmes are offered in English. The university emphasises interdisciplinary research through its Research Platforms, which foster collaboration across faculties. Notable research areas include quantum physics, molecular biology, cognitive science, and digital humanities.

Research and Innovation

The University of Vienna is a leading research institution in Central Europe. It operates numerous research centres and institutes, including the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) and the Research Platform "Data Science". The university is part of the European University Alliance Circle U., which includes seven other research-intensive European universities. Its annual budget supports extensive research activities, with over €300 million dedicated to research grants and projects. The university's library system holds over 7 million volumes, and its digital services include platforms such as u:space (student portal), u:find (course catalogue), and Moodle (learning management system).

Notable Alumni and Faculty

Throughout its history, the University of Vienna has been associated with 17 Nobel laureates, including Erwin Schrödinger (Physics, 1933), Friedrich Hayek (Economics, 1974), and Max Perutz (Chemistry, 1962). Other renowned figures include Sigmund Freud (founder of psychoanalysis), Karl Popper (philosopher of science), Gregor Mendel (geneticist), Stefan Zweig (writer), and Ludwig von Mises (economist). The university also educated numerous Austrian chancellors and political leaders.

International Presence

With students from over 130 countries and partnerships with 400+ universities globally, the university is a major hub for international academic exchange. It participates in the Erasmus+ programme and hosts a large number of international visiting scholars. The university also operates the Vienna International School of Thought, a summer academy for global researchers.
