MGM Springfield is a AAA Four Diamond-rated hotel and casino complex located in the Metro Center neighborhood of Springfield, Massachusetts. Opened on August 24, 2018, it was developed as the centerpiece of an ambitious urban-revival plan for the city, replacing a tornado-damaged area with a modern entertainment destination. The property is owned by Vici Properties and operated by MGM Resorts International, one of the world’s largest global hospitality and gaming companies. Spanning three city blocks, MGM Springfield offers a full-service casino with over 1,500 slot machines, table games, and a sportsbook; a 252-room hotel; multiple dining outlets; live entertainment venues including The Roar Comedy Club; and extensive meeting and event space. The resort was designed with a strong emphasis on historic preservation, incorporating several restored 19th-century buildings such as the former MassMutual headquarters and the South Church, blending modern luxury with Springfield’s architectural heritage. Since opening, MGM Springfield has served as an anchor for downtown redevelopment, generating significant tax revenue and tourism while facing challenges related to state mitigation funding and shifting market conditions.
Detailed Review
History & Development
MGM Springfield was the result of a competitive licensing process by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, which awarded the sole Western Massachusetts casino license to MGM Resorts in 2014. Construction began in 2015 on a site that had been devastated by the 2011 EF3 tornado. The project involved an exceptional degree of historic preservation: the 1908 MassMutual building (the original 12-story tower) was retained and repurposed as office space; the 1865 South Church was moved 350 feet and restored; and the 1846 Chandler Hotel was incorporated into the hotel entrance. The property officially opened on August 24, 2018.
Casino & Gaming
The casino floor features more than 1,500 slot machines, a wide range of table games (blackjack, roulette, craps, poker), and a dedicated high-limit area. BetMGM, the company’s digital sportsbook brand, operates a physical sportsbook at the property, allowing guests to wager on professional and college sports. The casino is open 24 hours a day.
Hotel & Amenities
The 252-room hotel offers deluxe guest rooms and suites, and is the only AAA Four Diamond-rated hotel in Springfield. Amenities include an outdoor pool, fitness center, and the MGM Rewards loyalty program, which provides points redeemable across all MGM Resorts properties. The resort also houses full-service spa and salon facilities.
Dining & Entertainment
MGM Springfield features a diverse dining lineup, from fine-dining options by celebrated chefs to casual eateries and a food hall. Entertainment venues include The Roar Comedy Club, a live performance theater, and multiple bars and lounges. The property regularly hosts concerts, comedy shows, and special events.
Community & Economic Impact
As part of its license agreement, MGM Springfield committed to local hiring, community grants, and mitigation payments to Springfield. The resort has been a major employer and catalyst for downtown revitalization. However, in fiscal year 2026, the Massachusetts Legislature eliminated the state’s casino mitigation fund, which had provided Springfield with approximately $3 million annually to address casino-related impacts such as traffic and public safety.
