History

Island Pro Digital was born out of entrepreneurial necessity when Kurt Kubik, after 20 years in printing, faced unemployment after his employer closed. In January 2010, he secured a small business loan, bought equipment from the defunct company, and launched Island Pro Digital from a 6,000-square-foot leased space in Islandia, New York. Within 18 months, growth forced a move to a 10,000-square-foot facility on David’s Drive in Hauppauge. By mid-2013, the company employed 13 people and served close to 300 customers, handling short-run copy printing (flyers, postcards, business cards) along with press work for cosmetics packaging, labels, and trade show displays (runs from one to 10,000 copies).

Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 tore off half the roof of the Hauppauge facility, damaging copiers, presses, computers, and supplies. The team worked under tarps to protect undamaged equipment and met all deadlines despite three days without power. Insurance covered most physical damage, but Kurt spent about a month managing claims, slowing daily operations. By mid-2013, the company had recovered and added a fifth employee.
