History and Development

Graton Resort & Casino is owned by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. The tribe first announced a casino in 2003, but after several site changes, legal challenges, and a successful compact with California Governor Jerry Brown in 2012, construction began in June 2012. The casino opened on November 5, 2013, financed with $825 million—at the time the largest loan package ever secured for an Indian casino. A major $1 billion expansion broke ground in 2025, with initial phases including AYA restaurant, Playbook Sports Bar, SoCo Dough Co., and a new smoke-free gaming wing already completed. Future phases will add 221 hotel rooms, a 3,500-seat theater, and a second pool.

Gaming and Amenities

The casino floor offers 135,000 square feet of gaming space with 3,000 slot machines, 144 table games (blackjack, craps, roulette, etc.), and a poker room. A large non-smoking gaming wing debuted in 2025. The hotel features 200 premium rooms with modern luxury finishes. Dining is a major draw, with ten distinct outlets ranging from casual (Marketplace food court, The Habit Burger Grill) to upscale (AYA rooftop restaurant by Chef Roy Ellamar, 630 Park Steakhouse). Playbook Sports Bar offers a 360-degree halo screen. Entertainment includes live concerts, comedy, and a planned 3,500-seat theater. The resort also hosts a 24-hour spa and salon, a business center, and meeting and event spaces.

Operations and Employment

The casino operates 24/7, 365 days a year, with a standard loyalty program. Graton employs approximately 2,000 team members and is actively hiring for its expansion. The property offers competitive benefits including tuition reimbursement, guest service bonuses, and immigration legal assistance. It has won numerous industry awards, including 17 Best of Gaming Awards from Casino Player Magazine in 2025, and was recognized as a Best Place to Work in the Bay Area.

Community Impact

Beyond direct employment, Graton has a large economic footprint in Sonoma County. The tribe has contributed over $200 million to local mitigation funds for roads, public safety, and environmental projects. The casino also partners with local nonprofits, sponsors Pride events, and hosts veteran benefit concerts. The ongoing expansion is expected to cement its role as a major economic engine for the North Bay region.

Regulatory and Licensing

As a tribal casino, Graton operates under a compact with the State of California and is regulated by the National Indian Gaming Commission and the tribe’s own gaming commission. It is a smoke-free property with a designated smoking area, enforces a strict 21+ age policy, and prominently displays problem gambling resources.
