Bally's

History

Bally's Corporation began as Twin River Worldwide Holdings, the owner of Rhode Island's Twin River Casino. The property's lineage stretches to Lincoln Park, a racino in Lincoln, Rhode Island, acquired in 2004 by investor groups including Standard General, the hedge fund led by Soo Kim. The rebuilt casino opened as Twin River Casino in 2007, and the holding company later expanded within Rhode Island with the Tiverton casino before listing on the NYSE under the ticker TRWH in 2019. Standard General then executed a brand-and-scale strategy: in late 2020 the company bought the operations of Bally's Atlantic City from Caesars, with the real estate leased from VICI Properties, licensed the Bally's name, and renamed itself Bally's Corporation.

Expansion and the Gamesys Deal

A second wave of acquisitions brought sportsbook technology provider Bet.Works, daily fantasy sports operator Monkey Knife Fight, and free-to-play games specialist Sportcaller. The most consequential deal came in March 2022, when Bally's completed the roughly £2.7 billion acquisition of London-listed Gamesys Group, transforming it into a genuinely international operator. The deal added UK Gambling Commission-licensed online bingo and casino brands such as Jackpotjoy, Vera&John, Virgin Games, and Botemania, and created the company's digital division, Bally's Interactive, based in London.

Land-Based Portfolio

On the land-based side, Bally's operates Bally's Atlantic City in New Jersey, Bally's Lincoln and Bally's Tiverton in Rhode Island, Bally's Dover in Delaware, Bally's Quad Cities in Illinois, and Bally's Lake Tahoe in Nevada. Its highest-profile project is Chicago: a temporary casino opened at the historic Medinah Temple in September 2023, while a permanent, large-scale casino is planned for the former Chicago Tribune Freedom Center site, with Gaming and Leisure Properties involved in financing. The Chicago build has been a financial strain and was a factor in the company's later decision to go private.

Business Model and Products

Bally's makes money from casino gaming revenue across its land-based properties, plus online sports betting under the Bally Bet brand and online casino under Bally Casino. Bally Bet launched first in Iowa in 2021 and has since rolled out across multiple regulated US states, while Bally Casino operates in regulated markets including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. The inherited Gamesys brands anchor the international business, particularly Jackpotjoy in the UK, and Bally's has also been pursuing a UK-facing sportsbook rollout and sports marketing partnerships.

Market Position

Bally's sits in an unusual position: it is a mid-sized regional casino operator competing with Penn Entertainment, Boyd Gaming, and Caesars on the land-based side, while its online operations compete with DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM in the US. Its acquisition-driven growth has made it one of the more active consolidators in US gambling, but it has also left it with a complex portfolio of legacy brands and a heavy debt load associated with the Chicago project.

Leadership and Ownership

The company has been controlled since its earliest days by Standard General, whose managing partner Soo Kim serves as Chairman. George Papanier led the company through the Twin River era until 2021; Gamesys CEO Lee Fenton then became group CEO after the merger; and in October 2023 the board appointed Robeson Reeves as CEO. In March 2024, Standard General announced a take-private agreement valued at roughly $4.6 billion, ending Bally's run as a listed company and giving it more operational flexibility to complete the Chicago development.
