Terrence A. Duffy
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CME Group
Terrence A. Duffy is an American financial executive who currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CME Group, the world's leading derivatives marketplace. He has been a pivotal figure at CME Group for over two decades, having been named Chairman of the Board in 2002 and taking on the additional role of Chief Executive Officer in November 2016. Duffy's leadership has been instrumental in the company's significant growth and strategic initiatives, including its evolution to meet changing market demands.
His career at CME began in 1980 as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In 1981, he founded his own firm, TDA Trading, Inc., where he served as president until 2002. Duffy became a CME member in 1981 and joined the CME board of directors in 1995. He was elected vice chairman in 1998 before assuming the chairman role in 2002, guiding CME through its initial public offering. He then became Executive Chairman in 2006, overseeing the historic merger of the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 2007, and the acquisition of the New York Mercantile Exchange in 2008. In 2018, he led the acquisition of NEX Group, further streamlining trading across various financial markets.
A notable development under Duffy's leadership is CME Group's expansion into prediction markets. In 2025, he spearheaded a groundbreaking partnership with FanDuel to launch a joint-venture prediction markets application called FanDuel Predicts. This initiative allows customers in America to engage in betting on financial markets, such as specific price levels in the S&P or economic indicators like inflation rates and GDP, for as little as $1 per contract, thereby expanding the reach of CME Group's benchmark products to a new audience. This venture places CME Group and Duffy directly within the broader gambling and betting ecosystem.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Duffy has been a leading voice in the financial industry, frequently testifying before Congress on key issues impacting derivatives markets. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2003 as a member of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB), a position he held until 2013. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Mayo Clinic Greater Chicago Leadership Council and is a board member of the CME Group Foundation. Duffy attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and has received honorary doctorates from Saint Xavier University and DePaul University. Effective March 1, 2027, Duffy is slated to resign as CEO and transition to the role of executive chairman of CME.
