Raja Krishnamoorthi

Raja Krishnamoorthi is an American attorney and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Illinois’ 8th congressional district since January 3, 2017. Born in New Delhi, India, on July 19, 1973, he was raised in Peoria, Illinois, after his family moved to the U.S. when he was three months old. He graduated as valedictorian from Richwoods High School, earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering (summa cum laude) from Princeton University, and a J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School.

After law school, he clerked for a federal judge, worked on Barack Obama’s 2000 House campaign and 2004 Senate campaign, and later served as a Special Assistant Attorney General under Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, helping create the state’s Public Integrity Unit. He was Deputy State Treasurer for Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias from 2007 to 2009, then Vice-Chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council. Prior to entering Congress, he was president of research-oriented small businesses in the Chicago area focused on national security and renewable energy technologies.

In Congress, he serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party (the first South Asian American to chair a full committee), and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He is Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services, and has been active on gambling-related issues, including investigating Polymarket’s role in election misinformation and co-sponsoring bills on prediction markets.
