Prof. Dr. Volker Gruhn is a German computer scientist and co-founder of adesso SE, where he serves as Chairman of the Supervisory Board. He also holds the Chair of Software Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen and sits on the supervisory boards of Staige One AG and the Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS).
Gruhn studied computer science at the University of Dortmund (1982–1987) and earned his PhD there in 1991. After a research stint at the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST), he became managing director of a VEBA Group software house from 1994 to 1996. In 1997 he returned to academia as a professor of practical informatics at the University of Dortmund, and that same year co-founded adesso AG (now adesso SE).
He held a research stay at Swinburne University in Melbourne (2000) and then chaired Applied Telematics / e-Business at the University of Leipzig (2002–2010). Since 2010 he has held the Chair of Software Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Gruhn has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications and has been a member of the DAK-Gesundheit digitalisation committee since 2017.
His governance roles extend into the lottery/gambling sector – as of 2014 he was Head of the Supervisory Board of the Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) – and into sports technology, where he chairs the Supervisory Board of Staige One AG. He continues to balance his academic career with active board leadership at adesso SE.
