Mike Selig

Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)

Mike Selig is the 16th Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), confirmed by the Senate in December 2025. As chair, he is shaping regulation of prediction markets and cryptocurrency derivatives, directly impacting the iGaming and gambling sector through enforcement actions and policy on sports-event contracts.

Selig began his career in 2014 as a law clerk to then-CFTC Commissioner J. Christopher Giancarlo (who later became CFTC Chairman). He then moved into private practice at global law firms, advising financial institutions, trading platforms, and digital-asset developers on compliance with securities and commodities laws. From 2022 to 2025 he was a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, where he focused on the intersection of financial regulations and crypto technologies.

In 2025 he returned to government as chief counsel of the SEC's Crypto Task Force, serving as senior advisor to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins. On December 18, 2025, the Senate confirmed him as CFTC Chairman. Selig has emphasized principles-based regulation and the minimum effective dose of regulation. Under his leadership, the CFTC has sued several states to assert exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets, including those offering sports-event contracts, arguing they are swaps under federal law.
