Mathew Bowyer operated an illegal sports betting business for 25 years, taking approximately $326 million in wagers from over 700 bettors, including Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani. The operation ran until October 2023 and was centered in Southern California.
He pleaded guilty in 2024 to running an illegal gambling business, money laundering, and filing a false tax return. Bowyer was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison, serving seven months at FCI Lompoc. The Nevada Gaming Commission added him to its 'Black Book', banning him from all Nevada casinos for life, and he was ordered to pay approximately $9 million in back taxes and penalties.
