Maruska Buttigieg Gili

Maruska Buttigieg Gili is a compliance and risk‑management executive with deep experience in Malta’s financial‑services and crypto sectors. She holds a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Malta and a Bachelor of Science in Financial Services from the University of Manchester, along with an associate degree from The London Institute of Banking and Finance.
She began her career at the Central Bank of Malta, where she spent over 12 years working first in Human Resources and later as a Senior Economic Statistician. This foundation gave her a thorough understanding of regulatory frameworks and macroeconomic analysis.
In 2007 she joined BNF Bank (formerly Banif Bank) as Head of Unit, Control and Compliance. Over the next 15 years she rose through the ranks, becoming Head of Internal Control and then, in 2017, Chief Risk Officer – a role she held until her resignation at the end of 2022. At BNF she built robust risk and compliance functions and navigated the bank through multiple regulatory changes.
Since moving to FalconX, she has led the company’s compliance function as Chief Compliance Officer, most recently overseeing FalconX’s authorisation under the EU’s Markets in Crypto‑Assets Regulation (MiCA) from the Malta Financial Services Authority. She also serves as a Non‑Executive Director and is a frequent speaker at industry events such as SiGMA and AIBC.
