
Hon. Silvio Schembri
Malta's Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects
Government Of MaltaBorn 21 May 1985 in Luqa, Malta, Silvio Schembri is a Maltese Labour Party politician and academic. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Honours in Economics from the University of Malta. He began his career in a private bank before becoming a Supervisor Economist at the Central Bank of Malta.
First elected to the Maltese Parliament in March 2013, he chaired the parliamentary committee for economic and financial affairs and served as an advisor to the Economy Affairs Ministry. He was also the founding member and general manager of the Gal Xlokk Foundation. From 2017 to 2020 he served as Parliamentary Secretary for Financial Services, Digital Economy and Innovation, where he drove Malta’s first AI strategy, launched the AI Certification Programme, and established the first national regulatory framework for blockchain services.
He was appointed Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects in January 2020, and has since held several iterations of that portfolio, including Minister for the Economy and Industry, Minister for the Economy, EU Funds and Lands, and currently Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects. He also serves as voluntary chairman of the Responsible Gaming Foundation Malta, an independent body focused on gambling-related harm prevention.
