Denise Coates

Denise Coates CBE is a prominent British businesswoman, widely recognized as the founder, majority shareholder, and joint chief executive of the online gambling company, Bet365. Born on September 26, 1967, in Stoke-on-Trent, England, she comes from a family deeply involved in the betting industry. Her early career began as a cashier in her father's bookmaking firm, Provincial Racing, while she was still at school. She later earned a first-class degree in econometrics from the University of Sheffield and trained as an accountant.

Coates ascended to managing director of Provincial Racing in 1995, expanding the chain from 12 to 49 shops through organic growth and acquisition. However, she foresaw the transformative potential of the internet for the gambling industry. In January 2000, she purchased the domain name Bet365.com and, by mortgaging the family's betting shops and securing a £15 million loan, launched the online betting platform in 2001. In 2005, she sold the traditional betting shops to Coral for £40 million to focus entirely on the burgeoning online enterprise.

Under her leadership, Bet365 rapidly grew into one of the world's largest online gambling companies, facilitating billions in bets annually and employing thousands globally. The company is particularly noted for pioneering in-play betting, a product allowing users to wager in real-time on ongoing events. Coates has consistently been recognized as one of the highest-paid executives in the UK, with her annual earnings reflecting the immense success of Bet365.

Beyond her business achievements, Coates is also a philanthropist. She established the Bet365 Foundation in 2012, later renamed the Denise Coates Foundation in 2016, which has donated hundreds of millions of pounds to various UK charities supporting medical research, disaster relief, education, and community initiatives. For her services to the community and business, she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2012 and was inducted into the Sports Betting Hall of Fame in 2019.
