Dario Durigan

Dario Durigan is a Brazilian lawyer and senior government official who currently serves as the Minister of Finance of the Federative Republic of Brazil, a position he assumed in March 2026 after replacing Fernando Haddad. He was appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and has since been the central figure in overseeing Brazil’s economic policy and regulatory framework. Durigan holds a law degree from the University of São Paulo (USP) and brings a technical, legal background to the ministry.

Before becoming minister, Durigan was the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Finance under Minister Fernando Haddad. In that role, he was described as the “watchdog” of Haddad’s economic agenda, playing a key part in implementing new fiscal rules and steering Brazil’s economic reforms. His work earned him a reputation as a disciplined and detail-oriented administrator, particularly in managing the country's budget and public spending.

Durigan has been directly involved in regulating the iGaming and sports betting sectors in Brazil. He announced leadership changes at the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), blocked prediction market platforms, and called for tighter restrictions on betting advertisements, comparing the industry’s impact to that of cigarettes. His regulatory stance has made him a prominent figure in the international gambling industry, with trade publications frequently quoting his decisions and statements.

Beyond his domestic responsibilities, Durigan has represented Brazil in international financial forums, including meetings with the New Development Bank and other multilateral institutions. He is considered a pragmatic and reform-minded official, focused on maintaining fiscal discipline while navigating the political challenges of a divided Congress. His tenure as finance minister is expected to last until the end of President Lula’s term.
