Brian Armstrong is the co‑founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Coinbase Global, Inc., the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States. Born on January 25, 1983, in San Jose, California, to engineer parents, he attended Bellarmine College Preparatory and earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in computer science and economics (2005) and a Master’s in computer science (2006) from Rice University.
Early in his career, Armstrong worked as a software developer at IBM and a consultant at Deloitte before joining Airbnb as a software engineer in 2011, where he was exposed to international payment systems. Inspired by the Bitcoin white paper, he spent evenings developing a cryptocurrency wallet and entered Y Combinator in 2012, co‑founding Coinbase with Fred Ehrsam. Under his leadership, Coinbase went public via a direct listing in April 2021, achieving a market capitalization of $85 billion.
Beyond Coinbase, Armstrong founded the open‑access scientific research platform ResearchHub and co‑founded NewLimit, a biotechnology company focused on epigenetic reprogramming to extend human healthspan.
