Artem R. Oganov

Artem R. Oganov is a Distinguished Professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) and Chief Scientific Officer at SberUniversity. He is a leading computational crystallographer and materials scientist, recognized globally for his work on crystal structure prediction.
He invented the USPEX algorithm (Universal Structure Predictor: Evolutionary Xtallography), a computational method that predicts crystal structures from first principles. Used by over 10,000 researchers worldwide, USPEX has become a standard tool in materials discovery.
Oganov began his academic career at ETH Zurich, where he completed his habilitation and served as a senior scientist from 2003 to 2008. He then moved to Stony Brook University as Professor of Geosciences and Computational Sciences, staying until 2017. Since 2013 he has held a concurrent professorship at Northwestern Polytechnical University, where he founded and directs the International Center for Materials Discovery.
His research has predicted numerous novel materials, including superhard γ‑boron, transparent sodium, and the unusual compound Na₂He, which have reshaped understanding of planetary interiors and extreme conditions. He has authored over 300 peer‑reviewed articles and four books.
Oganov is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the European Academy of Sciences, and the CORE Academy. He was elected a Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2015. His current work continues to advance computational materials discovery and its applications.
