Tonybet opens National Bank Open betting markets for Montreal and Toronto

Tonybet has entered the betting picture for the National Bank Open, adding markets for both the men's and women's competitions in Canada. The event runs from 1 to 13 August, with the ATP Tour at IGA Stadium in Montreal and the WTA Tour at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.

Long-running tournament

First held at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club in 1881, the tournament is the third-oldest active tennis event, behind only Wimbledon and the US Open. It also predates the French Open and Australian Open, and has been staged every year apart from the two World Wars and 2020, when Covid forced a cancellation. Isidore Hellmuth claimed the first title with a straight-sets win over W.H. Young. In the record books, Ivan Lendl remains the men's leader with six trophies, while Chris Evert and Monica Seles top the women's Open Era list with four each. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are all previous champions.

Recent storylines

At the most recent edition, Victoria Mboko became a breakout winner of the women's title in Montreal. The then-18-year-old, ranked outside the top 80 at the time, beat four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the final. She was the first Canadian woman to lift the trophy since Bianca Andreescu in 2019, and the first before that was Faye Urban in 1969. Mboko was due to defend in Toronto this year, but a knee injury picked up in London in June has forced her out. Though she won't compete, the world No. 10 is still slated to make appearances at Sobeys Stadium, meaning the women's draw will lack its defending champion.

Ben Shelton is set to defend the men's title he captured in Toronto in 2025. Montreal natives Félix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo are part of the field, while Canada is still waiting for its first male home winner since Robert Bédard in 1958.

Expanded event and betting

The tournament was lengthened in 2025 from seven days to 12, with 96-player draws in both cities. That edition set an attendance record of 504,860, the biggest crowd of any combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 competition that season. Singles champions collect 1,000 ranking points, underlining the event's status as a key US Open warm-up. The men's and women's draws take place on 31 July, with top seeds earning byes into the second round.
