Tim Miller to Depart Gambling Commission After a Decade of Service

Tim Miller, the Gambling Commission’s executive director for policy and research, has announced his intention to leave the regulator in September, concluding a ten-year tenure. Miller’s departure marks the end of a significant period during which he played a pivotal role in shaping numerous regulatory updates.

Following his exit, Miller plans to transition into an international advisory capacity, operating independently outside the UK's regulated gambling environment. He shared on LinkedIn, "I am now looking forward to working for myself." He further elaborated that this new role would involve collaborating globally with governments, regulatory bodies, and various organizations focused on cultivating robust and competitive markets.

Throughout his time at the Commission, which he initially joined in 2016, Miller spearheaded the research function and led several high-profile policy initiatives. His accomplishments include overseeing the introduction of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain and guiding the implementation of key elements from the Gambling Act review and its subsequent white paper. These reforms encompassed crucial areas such as enhanced age verification protocols, the piloting of financial vulnerability checks, the regulation of remote game design, and the tightening of direct marketing standards.

In an official statement released by the Commission, Miller reflected on his experience, stating, "I have worked at the commission longer than anywhere else during my career and have found it the most rewarding and fulfilling role." Sarah Gardner, the interim chief executive of the Gambling Commission, acknowledged Miller’s contributions, commending his "outstanding service to the commission for ten years" and expressing gratitude for his "significant contribution to gambling regulation."

Miller’s exit contributes to a series of recent leadership changes within the Gambling Commission. Earlier this year, Andrew Rhodes also stepped down as CEO in February, subsequently moving to the new industry consultancy, Hawkbridge. The Commission has confirmed that Miller will remain in his current position until September, with details regarding his successor to be announced at a later date.
