The recent World Cup underscored a recurring challenge for iGaming operators: while major sporting events significantly boost new player acquisition, the true test lies in converting this surge into sustainable, long-term player loyalty. According to Christoffer Feldt-Sørensen, Chief Sales Officer at Symplify, success in this arena will not hinge on who acquires the most new customers, but rather on those who effectively leverage real-time behavioral signals to enhance engagement before opportunities vanish.
Feldt-Sørensen highlighted a common and costly error: treating all tournament bettors identically. He explained that players arriving during a major event, such as the World Cup, possess varied intentions. Some are experienced bettors who will naturally transition to domestic leagues, while others are purely event-driven with no obvious subsequent interest. "Treating both groups identically is one of the most common and costly mistakes we see," Feldt-Sørensen stated, noting that this approach can lead to over-servicing engaged players and under-serving those at risk of churn.
