Prediction Market Sector Sees Canadian Expansion, Record Contests, and New Approvals

2026-06-19

The prediction market sector is experiencing rapid expansion, with Kalshi launching services in Canada through a partnership with Wealthsimple, while Polymarket unveiled plans for a record-setting $21 million NFL survivor contest, and Novig obtained CFTC approval as a Designated Contract Market. These developments underscore increased market access and diverse offerings in the industry.

The prediction market industry recently saw significant advancements, including Kalshi's expansion into the Canadian market, Polymarket's upcoming record-setting survivor contest, and Novig securing a key regulatory approval. These developments highlight the growing landscape for event-based trading platforms.

In a notable move for cross-border operations, Kalshi has partnered with Wealthsimple to introduce prediction market services in Canada. Wealthsimple officially launched "Wealthsimple Predict" on June 18, following authorization from the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) approximately three months prior. Through this collaboration, Toronto-based Wealthsimple will offer users access to nearly 4,000 Kalshi-based event contracts via a dedicated standalone application. CIRO's approval, granted in March, allows for certain event contracts with settlement periods of 30 days or longer. While markets for financial indicators, climate, and economic data are permitted, local regulations currently prohibit contracts related to sports and elections. Wealthsimple marks the second investment dealer to receive such regulatory clearance from CIRO, after Interactive Brokers, which gained approval in 2025. Brett Huneycutt, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Wealthsimple, commented on the expansion, stating, "Until now, Canadians have had limited access; Wealthsimple Predict gives Canadians a clean, well-designed way to access these markets." Kalshi, already federally authorized by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), extends its global reach to users in 140 countries through this latest venture.

While Canadian expansion was underway, a stunning result in a recent World Cup match led to significant financial swings on the Polymarket platform. During a World Cup encounter between Spain and Cape Verde, unranked 67th in the world, the match concluded in a 0-0 draw. This outcome resulted in a nearly million-dollar loss for one trader who had staked $999,068 on Spain to win. Conversely, another anonymous trader, "fishalive," capitalized on the upset, winning $4.7 million from a $400,000 wager against a Spanish victory, reflecting pre-match odds of just 9%. Another user, "flickraw," experienced a streak of misfortune, initially losing $2.7 million on a Netherlands vs. Japan match when Japan scored a late equalizer, then dropping another $1.5 million on a subsequent Belgium vs. Egypt game due to an own goal.

Looking ahead, Polymarket is also gearing up for a major offering in the sports betting sphere through a new collaboration with Splash Sports. The partnership will launch the world's largest pro football survivor contest, commencing with the 2026 NFL regular season. This contest promises an unprecedented guaranteed prize pool of $21 million, surpassing the $20 million guaranteed by Circa Sports for its 2026 iteration. Splash Sports, a platform focused on skill-based social sports gaming, will integrate Polymarket's event-driven trading capabilities, operating as a CFTC-registered introducing broker. Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, "Partnering with them for the biggest survivor contest in history is the perfect way to bring prediction markets to NFL fans at scale."

Further validating the growth of prediction markets, Novig recently secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate as a Designated Contract Market (DCM). While specific launch states for the platform have not yet been disclosed, this regulatory milestone positions Novig to expand its offerings. Jacob Fortinsky, CEO of Novig, emphasized the platform's user-centric design, stating, "Novig is the first sports prediction market built by sports traders for sports traders."
