ICONIC21 CCO Alina Mihaela Popa argues that iGaming operators and providers should shift from evaluating individual game launches to building adaptable product ecosystems, using the company's Gravity Series as an example of how consistent mechanics can create compounding value across multiple formats.
The iGaming industry is moving away from evaluating games as standalone releases and toward a more holistic portfolio approach, according to Alina Mihaela Popa, Chief Commercial Officer at ICONIC21. In a recent analysis, Popa argues that the traditional model of launching one title after another no longer suits an environment where operators manage vast content libraries.
Familiar Foundations for Memorable Products
Popa challenges the common assumption that creativity and familiarity are opposites. She notes that the most successful games often build on recognisable mechanics—such as blackjack or roulette—rather than trying to reinvent the player experience entirely. Familiarity reduces friction and gives players confidence, providing a springboard for meaningful enhancements without alienating the audience.
Ideas That Travel Across the Portfolio
The critical shift, Popa explains, is from investing innovation in individual titles to investing in concepts that can be adapted across multiple formats. ICONIC21’s Gravity Series exemplifies this thinking: a core mechanic remains consistent whether applied to blackjack, roulette, Sic Bo, Plinko, or a live game show. “That is what portfolio thinking looks like in practice: building ideas that compound rather than reset with every release,” Popa said.
Evaluating Portfolios, Not Products
Popa urges operators to consider broader questions when assessing content partners. Instead of asking only whether a single game will perform, she suggests evaluating whether successful concepts can be extended into new formats, whether launches can reinforce one another in the lobby, and whether innovation can compound over time. Sustainable growth, she argues, comes from systems that generate repeatable value, not from isolated hits.
The Enduring Value of Adaptable Ecosystems
While novelty and creativity remain essential, Popa predicts that the companies creating the greatest long-term impact will be those that think beyond individual releases. As markets mature, the ability to build recognisable, adaptable product ecosystems may prove more valuable than celebrating the next big launch.
