Play'n GO Launches in Alberta as Third Canadian Regulated Market
2026-07-16
Play'n GO has launched in Alberta's newly regulated iGaming market, becoming the company's third Canadian province with over ten operators live on day one. The move follows a licence from the AGLC and aligns with Alberta's market opening on July 13, 2026, which aims to capture unregulated wagering activity.
Swedish gaming supplier Play'n GO has entered the newly regulated Alberta iGaming market, making it the company’s third Canadian province after Ontario and Quebec. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC) granted the licence, allowing Play'n GO to offer its portfolio of premium online casino titles to licensed operators in the province.
On market launch day, Play'n GO went live with more than ten licensed operators, according to Esteban Perez, the company’s new market entry lead. “Entering Alberta with more than 10 operators on day one of regulation is a significant milestone for Play’n GO and a testament to the strength of our regulated market strategy,” Perez said. The company had already begun certifying a selection of its games to meet Alberta’s technical and regulatory standards ahead of the opening.
The Alberta market officially opened on July 13, 2026, with a regulated framework covering both sports betting and iGaming. The province expects to capture a significant portion of the estimated 70% of online wagering currently taking place on unregulated sites. Licensed operators are subject to a 20% gross gaming revenue tax, with portions allocated to First Nations initiatives and social responsibility programs. As of early May, 28 operators had been approved or were in the licensing pipeline, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and theScore Bet.
Market Structure and Player Protections
The AGLC will serve as the regulator while continuing to operate the existing PlayAlberta platform. A separate body, the Alberta iGaming Corporation, will manage operator contracts — a structure similar to Ontario’s model. Player protection features, such as system-wide self-exclusion and financial and time-based limit tools, are available at launch. Play’n GO’s portfolio includes iconic titles like Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead, Reactoonz, and Moon Princess, spanning grid slots, table games, and branded series.
Company Strategy and Future Expansion
Magnus Olsson, Play’n GO’s Chief Commercial Officer, described the Alberta licence as a natural progression of the company’s North American ambitions. “Regulated markets are the foundation of our business, and Alberta represents an exciting opportunity to expand our footprint in a jurisdiction that shares our commitment to high standards, player protection and long-term sustainability,” Olsson said. The company’s Alberta entry builds on its established presence in Ontario and Quebec and reinforces its strategy of entering only regulated jurisdictions. Play’n GO’s portfolio now exceeds 450 titles available across more than 35 regulated markets worldwide.
