GR8_TECH’s Team of Champions activation showed industry professionals picked Spain among the top four contenders even though public betting volume ranked them last, highlighting the gap between crowd sentiment and informed trading judgment. Spain went on to win the World Cup final 1‑0 against Argentina, whom 82% of Betano punters had expected to win.

A pre-tournament betting initiative run by GR8_TECH has revealed that industry professionals consistently rated Spain as a contender, even when public betting volumes pointed elsewhere. The Cyprus-based technology firm’s Team of Champions activation asked 48 industry figures to place a single bet on the World Cup winner, with Argentina, England, France and Spain emerging as the most popular picks.

Despite being one of the four most‑backed teams among the professionals, Spain attracted the lowest share of semifinal betting volume at just 11.61%, trailing England (17.24%), Argentina (33.79%) and France (37.36%). Once Spain and Argentina were confirmed for the final on 18 July, the wider market quickly shifted in Spain’s direction after the underdog secured a 1‑0 victory in extra time.

“Betting volume told us Spain were the outsiders even in the final four,” said Sergey Ghazaryan, Chief Revenue Officer at GR8_TECH. He added: “That distance between crowd sentiment and informed judgment is what a trading desk navigates every single day.” The contrast between public perception and professional insight, Ghazaryan noted, is exactly the gap that a well‑designed sportsbook platform must help operators identify in real time.

Retail bookmaker data reflected the public’s preference for Argentina. At Betano, owned by Kaizen Gaming, 82% of customers backed Lionel Messi’s side to lift the World Cup for a second time. Those expectations were dashed as Spain ground out a 1‑0 win after 120 minutes.

GR8_TECH itself prepared thoroughly for the tournament, overhauling its sportsbook platform in April and making parallel upgrades to its customer acquisition and retention tools. The World Cup period also coincided with the company’s rebrand from GR8 Tech to GR8_TECH.
