The announcement comes during a broader shift in how safer gambling services and voluntary organisations are funded in the UK, a transition that has sparked significant concern across the third sector.
Transition Challenges and Industry Concerns
Earlier in 2025, Gordon Moody was among several charities that warned that delays and uncertainty in the new funding framework had brought the third sector to the brink of a crisis. The NHS funding removes the immediate cliff-edge for Gordon Moody, but structural issues remain throughout the transition period.
BetBlocker, another charity that secured NHS funding after a lengthy process, has voiced similar concerns. Duncan Garvie, Chief Executive of BetBlocker, said the process had been "bittersweet," noting that while his organisation gained certainty, he had "watched so many peers" and organisations whose work he highly regarded receive "really hard outcomes from this."
Garvie cautioned that the support infrastructure risks losing significant knowledge and expertise in the interim, despite his optimism that the new system will ultimately serve users well once the transition is complete. "My heart goes out to all of these organisations," he said, urging others to reach out if BetBlocker could provide any support.
The new funding agreement with Gordon Moody is expected to help stabilise one part of the treatment landscape, even as the wider ecosystem adjusts to the reformed funding model.
