Flutter’s Rooney on Player Props, Hydration Breaks, and the AI Shift in Sportsbook Pricing

2026-07-30

Flutter's Malachy Rooney discusses World Cup player props, hydration breaks, data-driven stats betting, and AI's evolving role in pricing, highlighting that algorithm-driven advantages will shift toward customer understanding.

In the second part of an interview with iGaming Expert, Malachy Rooney, Head of Football Strategy and Pricing at Flutter Entertainment, shared his views on the World Cup’s impact on player props, the role of hydration breaks in live betting, and how data and AI are reshaping pricing and trading.

Player Props and Star-Studded Goals

Rooney noted that during the group stage, marquee names such as Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane scored heavily, leading to correlated payouts across goalscorer markets, Bet Builders, and pre-tournament milestones. The four players combined for 31 goals, which made early tournament results customer-friendly for bookmakers. However, that trend faded in the knockout stages, where betting stakes were higher and yellow cards were scarce due to a FIFA directive.

Hydration Breaks as Commercial Pauses

Rooney remarked that calling them “hydration breaks” is “very diplomatic” when they are effectively commercial ad breaks. He observed that the three-minute pauses caused momentum swings but emphasised that 104 matches is a small sample for firm conclusions. From a trading perspective, any stoppage gives customers a chance to reassess, place new bets, or cash out. He doubts such breaks will be adopted domestically except in extreme weather.

Scope for Stats Betting Expansion

Rooney sees considerable room to improve the user experience in existing markets and expand the range of competitions covered. With better data capture and emerging technologies, customers betting on lower-tier leagues like English League Two or Spanish Segunda could enjoy the same rich proposition as Premier League punters. Bet tracking, an ancillary feature within props, has grown in importance and complexity but still needs optimisation beyond top-tier competitions.

AI’s Growing but Limited Role

AI is accelerating how quickly traders collate and analyse data, enabling faster modelling improvements. Rooney predicts a wave of AI-native startups in the next five years offering pricing solutions without legacy tech burdens. Yet he stressed that “any algorithm is only ever as good as the data powering it.” As sophisticated models become more accessible, operator advantages will shift from the technology itself to how well they understand their customers and their behaviour.

Post-World Cup Season Challenges

The return of domestic seasons after international tournaments is always tricky due to player fatigue and injuries. Rooney expects an amplified impact in the first five gameweeks, with larger price moves before kick-off and more volatile in-play swings as teams under- or overperform. He looks forward to navigating that challenge.

SBC Summit Lisbon

Rooney will attend SBC Summit in Lisbon for the first time and is particularly drawn to the keynote on Leadership in Sports Business featuring Michael Jordan. He also wants to discuss differing regulatory landscapes and shares his belief that “the better the models get and the easier everyone can get their hands on them, the more the future edge will come down to how well you actually know and understand your customers.”
