Dan Phillips of NEL Advisory joined the 'Right to the Source' podcast to discuss iGaming product innovation and the grey market debate, ahead of his role facilitating the interactive Open Space session at iGB L!VE, focusing on AI and personalization. The session, under Chatham House rules, aims to foster candid industry discussions.
Ahead of iGB L!VE, industry veteran Dan Phillips, CEO and founder of NEL Advisory, was a guest on the Right to the Source podcast. He joined hosts Robin Harrison and Ed Birkin to delve into critical topics facing the iGaming sector, specifically focusing on the reality of product innovation and the ongoing debate surrounding grey market operators.
Unpacking Industry Innovation
Phillips shared insights from his extensive career, which began as a dealer in a Soho basement casino back in 1996. This foundational experience informed his perspective on whether true innovation has occurred in the iGaming industry over the past three decades. Ed Birkin suggested a lack of genuine novelty, arguing that offerings like bet builders are merely revamped multiples, prediction markets exploit regulatory loopholes, and live casino is an established concept. Robin Harrison countered, proposing that authentic innovation often stems from iterative problem-solving rather than headline-grabbing new products. Phillips offered a middle ground, stating the industry excels more at integrating existing concepts than at pioneering entirely new ones, emphasizing that previously introduced ideas cannot be uninvented and should be embraced.
A significant area of agreement among the three was the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Phillips views AI's true value in enabling deep personalization for users, moving beyond simple recommendation engines. Birkin concurred, noting the industry has discussed personalization for 15 years but has yet to fully deliver on its promise, underscoring AI's transformative capacity.
The Grey Market Conundrum
The conversation also tackled the contentious subject of operators who established their businesses in unregulated markets before transitioning to regulated environments. The podcast hosts and Phillips found themselves at different points on whether these operators deserve recognition for eventually operating legitimately, reflecting a complex and unresolved industry discussion.
iGB L!VE: The Open Space Session
Phillips will be facilitating a unique session at iGB L!VE called Open Space, part of iGB Executive. This event aims to foster direct, informal dialogue among operators, suppliers, and product leaders, distinct from traditional panel discussions. Scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm in the South Gallery at ExCeL London, the session will operate under Chatham House rules, ensuring a candid, unrecorded exchange of ideas. Attendees will drive the agenda, with initial interest showing 36% wanting to discuss AI, 12% customer engagement and retention, and 11% payments. Phillips highlighted the session's purpose, stating it's designed “to have conversations that simply do not happen on panels.” The interactive format will also include live voting and open idea sharing.
Catching Up with the Hosts
Attendees at iGB L!VE can also find the Right to the Source hosts at various events. Ed Birkin is scheduled to speak on a taxation and channelisation panel at the Africa Summit on Wednesday, July 1, at 2:00 pm, and will later appear on a prediction markets and World Cup panel on Thursday, July 2, also at 2:00 pm. Robin Harrison will host a fireside chat at the Startup Accelerator on June 30 and will emcee the Africa Summit on July 1.
