Brazil's Ministry of Health is launching a national campaign to educate the public on betting addiction risks and promote mental health support, while new advertising restrictions for operators take effect in July.
Brazil's Ministry of Health is rolling out a nationwide public awareness initiative designed to inform the population about the dangers of online betting and direct those struggling with gambling-related harm toward support. The campaign zeroes in on the mental health consequences of excessive wagering while promoting the treatment options offered through the country's Unified Health System (SUS).
Campaign materials will assist people in identifying the early signs of problematic gambling, work to diminish the stigma attached to addiction, and guide users to specialized care and family support resources. Because Brazil is in an electoral period, the Federal Government needed approval from the Superior Electoral Court before launching the campaign, given strict restrictions on public advertising during this time.
Court President Nunes Marques granted authorization, ruling that the effort serves a genuine public health objective rather than a promotional one. "The purpose of this campaign is not merely informative or promotional, but it is part of the public mental health policy itself," he stated, framing it as a prevention and guidance mechanism to broaden access to public care services.
Separately, Brazil recently enacted a fresh set of advertising restrictions for licensed betting operators. Starting 17 July, all betting ads must carry one of three mandatory warnings: "Betting can cause addiction," "Betting makes you lose money," or "Betting is not an investment."
