History

Verimatrix was founded in 1995 by Jacek Kowalski and Bruno Charrat as a software startup in a small office on Lusk Boulevard in San Diego, California. The company initially specialized in content security for the pay-TV industry, developing conditional access and digital rights management (DRM) technologies that became widely adopted by cable and satellite operators. Over the following decade, Verimatrix expanded its reach into the rapidly growing OTT streaming market, building a portfolio of anti-piracy and content protection solutions designed to address the challenges of internet-delivered video.

In 2017, Verimatrix strengthened its capabilities through two key acquisitions: Meontrust, an internet software and services company providing authentication services, and the MiriMON technology and development team from Genius Digital, a TV audience analytics firm. These moves enhanced Verimatrix’s ability to offer end-to-end security and audience measurement tools to media companies.

The most transformative event in Verimatrix’s history came in 2019 when it was acquired by the French semiconductor security company Inside Secure. The combined entity adopted the Verimatrix name and refocused on software-based cybersecurity for the entertainment, mobile, IoT, and connected car industries. That same year, Verimatrix sold its Silicon IP, Secure Protocols and Provisioning business to Rambus Inc., streamlining its operations around software and cloud-based security solutions.

Recent Strategic Developments

In December 2025, Verimatrix agreed to sell its XTD mobile application shielding product line, along with associated patents and employees, to the Belgian company Guardsquare (developer of ProGuard) for $8.5 million. This move signaled a strategic pivot to concentrate on Verimatrix’s core video anti-piracy business, which accounts for the majority of its revenue. According to company announcements in March 2026, subscriptions for video content protection solutions grew 7% compared to 2024, and recurring revenue exceeded 67% of total revenue by the end of 2025. The company reported Q1 2026 revenue of $10.7 million and maintained a cash position of $15.5 million as of March 31, 2026.
