USD Coin (USDC) is a fully reserved, regulated stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, issued by Circle Internet Group. Launched in September 2018 through the Centre Consortium, a joint venture between Circle and Coinbase, USDC has become the world’s largest regulated digital dollar, designed to combine the stability of the U.S. dollar with the speed and global reach of blockchain technology. It operates natively on 35 blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon, and is transferable across chains via Circle’s Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP). As of mid-2025, over $40 billion USDC is in circulation, used for payments, trading, lending, and remittances by individuals, fintechs, and large institutions. Circle holds USDC reserves in highly liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets, with monthly attestations published by Deloitte, and is regulated under U.S. money transmission laws with licenses in numerous states and jurisdictions. Adoption spans more than 500 million wallets globally, supported by a network of banks, exchanges, and payment processors. USDC’s regulatory compliance and transparency have made it the preferred stablecoin for institutional finance, cross-border payments, and onchain applications.
Detailed Review
History & Founding
USDC was announced by Circle on 15 May 2018 and launched in September 2018 through the Centre Consortium, a joint venture between Circle and Coinbase created to jointly govern the stablecoin’s reserves and issuance. In August 2023, Circle and Coinbase dissolved the Centre Consortium, giving Circle full governance over USDC. Circle itself was founded in 2013 by Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville as a peer-to-peer payment and exchange platform, later pivoting to stablecoin infrastructure. On 5 June 2025, Circle went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker CRCL.
Technology & Ecosystem
USDC is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum but is also native to 34 other blockchains. It uses a “burn and mint” model: Circle mints new USDC when users deposit U.S. dollars, and burns USDC when users redeem for dollars. Key infrastructure includes the Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), which enables secure, native USDC transfers between supported chains without wrapping; Circle Mint, an institutional portal for minting, redeeming, and managing USDC; Circle Account, a business API for payments and treasury management; Circle Reserve Fund (USDXX), an SEC-registered 2a-7 government money market fund that holds the majority of USDC reserves; and Circle Pay, a payment platform allowing merchants to accept USDC and settle in fiat.
Regulatory Position
Circle holds more than 40 U.S. state money transmitter licenses and is registered with FinCEN. It publishes monthly reserve attestations by Deloitte and maintains a fully transparent reserve composition. In the European Economic Area, Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS became a dual issuer of USDC from July 2024 under MiCA.
Market Position & Competition
As of early 2026, USDC is the second-largest stablecoin by market cap behind Tether USDt, but leads in regulated stablecoin volume. In August 2024, Visa data showed USDC overtook Tether in transaction volume. USDC is widely seen as the institutional-grade alternative to Tether, with deeper integration into traditional finance, such as Visa settlement and UNHCR aid distribution. Its market cap has fluctuated around $40–60 billion, recovering after the March 2023 de-peg incident caused by Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse.
Growth & Use Cases
USDC enables 24/7 real-time payments, cross-border remittances, decentralized finance (DeFi) lending, and corporate treasury management. In 2025, Circle launched X402, an internet-native payment standard using the HTTP 402 status code. The stablecoin is accessible in 185 countries and processed over $3 trillion in all-time volume as of early 2026.
