Gamban

History and Founding

Gamban was founded in 2015 by Jack Symons, a UK student who experienced gambling addiction firsthand and found that existing blocking tools were ineffective. He created Gamban as a dedicated, unbypassable solution. Co-founder Matt Zarb-Cousin, a former gambling addict and campaigner for gambling reform, joined to amplify the mission. The company started with public health funding from England's Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, allowing free access to UK residents until March 2026, when the grant was not renewed.

Product and Technology

Gamban’s core product is a lightweight application available on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It uses DNS-level filtering combined with locally stored blocklists that are updated regularly. The software blocks not only gambling websites but also gambling-related advertisements and pop-ups. On mobile, it leverages Apple’s Screen Time API and Android’s Accessibility Service for persistent blocking. Users cannot bypass the block by uninstalling the app without an unlock code, and there is no manual override during an active subscription. Recent updates added a progress dashboard that tracks days gamble-free, estimated money saved, and a streak counter, focusing on positive reinforcement.

Pricing and Business Model

Gamban operates on a subscription model. As of 2026, pricing is £4.99 per month or £29.99 per year outside the UK, with a 7-day free trial that does not require payment details. In certain US states like Michigan and West Virginia, Gamban remains free through partnerships with state gambling regulators. The shift from free to paid in the UK has been controversial, as it reduces accessibility for those on low incomes.

Partnerships and Integration

Gamban is the recommended blocking tool for the UK’s TalkBanStop campaign, a joint initiative with GamCare and Gamstop that combines self-exclusion, blocking software, and emotional support. It has also partnered with the International Gambling Control Board to provide free access in West Virginia, and with Norwegian gambling support services. These integrations have strengthened its position as the gold standard for gambling-blocking software.

Criticism and Limitations

The main criticism is the removal of free access for UK users after OHID funding ended, making the tool less accessible to those who need it most. Some advanced users can still bypass the software using VPNs or alternative browsers, though Gamban continuously updates its detection methods. Customer support is available via live chat during business hours, but phone support is not offered. Despite these limitations, Gamban remains the most reliable and ethical option in its category.
