The European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA) is a non-profit organisation headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, that serves as the single authoritative voice on advertising self-regulation in Europe and beyond. Founded in May 1992 in response to an EU challenge to create a self-regulatory solution for the emerging Single Market, EASA coordinates a network of national self-regulatory organisations (SROs), industry bodies representing advertisers, agencies and media, and digital pure-play members. Its core mission is to ensure that advertisements across all media are legal, decent, honest and truthful, thereby fostering consumer trust in brands and advertising. EASA administers a cross-border complaints system, provides best-practice recommendations, and advocates for effective independent self-regulation as a complement to statutory regulation. Through its secretariat and member network, the alliance handles hundreds of thousands of consumer complaints annually, pre-clears millions of ads, and offers copy advice to advertisers.
Detailed Review
History and Founding
EASA was founded in May 1992 in Brussels, Belgium, following a challenge from Sir Leon Brittan, then EU Vice-President, who called on the advertising industry to create a self-regulatory mechanism to support the Single Market. The initial membership comprised 15 self-regulatory organisations (SROs) from 13 European countries. Today, EASA’s network has expanded to include 28 European SROs, eight associate members from outside Europe (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, India, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa), 13 industry organisations, and digital pure-play members such as Google and TikTok (TikTok joined as a funding partner in 2025).
Operations and Services
EASA’s core work includes operating a cross-border complaint handling system—over 80,000 complaints were processed by its SRO network in 2024, with the majority resolved within one month. The alliance also issues best-practice guidelines on topics like influencer marketing and environmental claims, provides copy advice services, and conducts research on regulatory trends. Its secretariat, based in Brussels, manages a small team estimated at 10–20 full-time staff, though LinkedIn lists the company size as 11–50 employees.
Governance and Leadership
EASA is governed by a Board and an Executive Committee composed of elected representatives from member organisations. The Chairwoman is Orla Twomey, who also serves as CEO of the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland. Other key committee members include Vice-Chairs Zsolt Gerendi and Konrad Shek, Treasurer Conor Murray, and member Stéphane Martin. The day-to-day management is overseen by a Director General; as of mid-2025, the position was vacant and under recruitment.
