The Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC; Ojibwe: Gnoozhekaaning, “Place of the Pike”) is a federally recognized sovereign Ojibwe tribal nation in Michigan. Its reservation spans roughly 4.8 square miles in Chippewa County, with additional trust lands on Sugar Island. Formally established by an Act of Congress on June 19, 1860, the community represents five of the six original Sault Ste. Marie Bands of Chippewa Indians. Today, BMIC provides comprehensive governmental services to over 2,000 enrolled members, including healthcare, education, housing, and social programs. Economically, the tribe has diversified beyond gaming into cannabis and real estate; it operates the Northern Light Cannabis Company and signed a historic cannabis compact with Michigan in 2025. The tribe also runs a casino, a health center, and various infrastructure projects. Governed by an elected Executive Council led by President Whitney Gravelle, BMIC emphasizes sovereignty, cultural preservation, and economic self-sufficiency.
