  The Federal Ministry of Finance (Bundesministerium für Finanzen, BMF) is the supreme administrative authority for financial management in Austria. It is responsible for the collection of taxes and customs duties, the administration of fiscal and economic policy, and the oversight of the country’s federal budget. The ministry defines and conducts Austria’s budgetary policy, covering currency, credit, savings banks, exchange matters, capital movements, insurance supervision, and hallmarks. It also coordinates economic policy where not discharged by the Ministry of Economy. The BMF oversees several key agencies, including the Revenue Service, the Revenue Service for Large Businesses, and the Financial Police, which enforces tax and customs regulations and combats illegal employment and social security fraud. Notably, the ministry is the national regulator for gambling and lotteries, licensing and supervising all legal gaming operators in Austria. Headquartered in the historic Winter Palace of Prince Eugene in Vienna’s first district, the ministry has around 2,500 employees (official figures not publicly confirmed). It was formally established in 1920 following the adoption of the Austrian Constitution, although its roots trace back to the Imperial Treasury (k.k. Finanzministerium) created in 1848. The BMF is currently led by Federal Minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ), with State Secretary Barbara Eibinger-Miedl and Secretary General Stefan Imhof overseeing day‑to‑day administration. In recent years, the ministry has advanced digitalisation through its e‑Government portal (FinanzOnline) and the “Digital Austria” strategy, aiming to deliver fast, secure services to citizens and businesses.
